Collection: Firing Service

Our minimum charge for firing services is $15 whether it’s bisque or glaze. That cost covers a 'half shelf' - about the volume of 6-7 standard sized mugs. Full shelf is $30. You can also hire the entire 93 Litre kiln for $150 or the smaller 39 Litre kiln for $75 per load. Prices include gst.

To avoid explosions in the kilns work is fired only when it has reached a bone dry state. Bone dry greenware is extremely prone to cracking during transit. So if your work is fragile it can be dropped off while still a little damp for us to dry out. Please do not drop off 'wrapped' damp or bone dry greenware especially if it has attachments, as we won't be able to see the best way to handle the work to avoid potential damage while unwrapping. You can of course transport wrapped work if you wish but please remember to unwrap it before you leave.

Our criteria for glazing:

If any glaze on your work runs onto or touches the kiln shelf your work will be damaged. To help prevent this type of damage ensure there is absolutely no glaze on the underside of your work, and leave a glaze-free border of at least 2 mm around the bottom outside edge, including inside cut-outs such as letters (e.g. A, B, O, P etc). Any work with glaze on these areas is returned unfired for cleaning. If you’ve accidentally glazed these areas, you can remove the glaze with a steel rib or scraping tool and/or wipe away any residue with a damp cloth or sponge (a mask is recommended when working with dry clay or glaze particles - google silicosis). Applying thinner glaze on the bottom 1/3 of the piece is recommended if you are using mobile glazes (glazes that move or run).

We do not fire work with excessive amounts of wax. Please avoid applying excessively thick layers of wax on the underside of your work as this can produce unnecessary fumes and residues in our kilns. We recommend applying glaze without waxing the underside and removing any unwanted glaze before firing. There are several simple, time-saving ways to achieve clean edges without using wax.

We take all care however cannot take any responsibility if something breaks or if work doesn't turn out as expected.

Turnaround is usually within 7-10 working days for bone dry work. If you drop off damp work expect a delay while it dries.

We invoice when the work is ready for collection and it can be collected as soon as the invoice has been paid.

We load, fire and unload your work for you.

If your work is loaded with general work it is bisqued to cone 06 and glazed to cone 6. If you hire a whole kiln you can choose whatever firing schedule you prefer (any cone #, lustre, gold, etc). We can single fire your work if you do not wish to apply any glaze to it, or if you have applied a glaze suitable for single-firing, such as Mayco Stroke & Coat.

We're generally here Mon-Sat however drop off and collection times need to be confirmed with an ETA in advance, by email or text.

Work is left (in your own bag/box/tray) beside the front doors with your name, ph and email address for the invoice. Please include type of clay and/or glaze on your note - e.g. low fire, mid fire, high fire, lustre etc. If your work has special firing schedule requirements please leave these on your note. If you'd like the same box returned remember to also label or write your name on that too!

We don't have a lot of storage space in the kiln shed so please use a box that just fits the work as opposed to using oversized boxes.
